![]() Stone is a member of Google’s Project Zero research team, a group that specializes in finding zero day vulnerabilities in all kinds of software, whether it’s Google’s own apps, Windows, iOS, or something more obscure. This wasn’t a form of public confession or self-flagellation, but rather an illustration of the importance of perseverance and how much can be learned from failure. But that’s just what Maddie Stone did on Wednesday, spending a large portion of her Black Hat session on reverse-engineering zero day exploits used in the wild detailing several instances in which she had failed, sometimes in painful fashion. Rarely do researchers provide a look at the times they run into a wall, go down the wrong path, or waste days of work because of flawed assumptions. In some ways, security research is the inverse of that, with the successes celebrated publicly while the failures remain hidden. One of the truisms of intelligence work is that the public never hears about the successes, only the failures. ![]()

![]() Even some mothers from our sample indicated that they should be the ones to take charge of these discussions-though they also resoundingly asserted that fathers’ roles are crucial. Researchers may also lean into this assumption since the majority of prior studies on adolescent communication about dating and sex emphasize mothers’ roles. Because of these pervasive stereotypes, it’s easy to see how mothers would be the ones to take the primary role and facilitate open conversations with their teens as they explore their sexuality. ![]() Women are often assumed to be more emotional, caring, and nurturing while fathers are assumed to have difficulty expressing their vulnerable side. Reflecting on my initial doubts, I can see why I didn’t have much faith in fathers’ ability to communicate with their teens-especially when it comes to taboo topics such as dating and sex. The study’s findings will be used to develop an intervention program to help give fathers information, strategies, and peer support to surmount obstacles to talking with their teens and promote better sexual health for future generations. ![]() Grossman’s study-part of WCW’s Family, Sexuality, and Communication Research Initiative-aims to explore how fathers fit into conversations with their teens about dating and sex, and why it’s hard for some fathers to participate. Through identifying key themes from the families in our sample, Dr. ![]() ![]() Grossman, Ph.D.,’s interview data from fathers, mothers, and teens, I reevaluated my stance. Why would fathers have a significant impact on teens’ sexual health if someone else, like their mother, already has the situation under control? However, after taking a deeper dive into Senior Research Scientist Jennifer M. At the beginning of my summer research internship, I’ll admit that I didn’t fully understand the impact of fathers talking to their teens about dating and sex. ![]() ![]() ![]() The two most winning ballads – the overtly sincere “I Beg Your Pardon” and the note perfect “This One’s From the Heart” – help bookend the side. But the second half of the album is the sharpest. Swelling strings, horns and a jazz combo construct the songs on the first side that range from the sentimental ( “Once Upon a Town,” “Broken Bicycles“) to the snarky and humorous ( “Picking Up After You”). The album is built around some of the most orchestrated music Waits has ever composed – think about his version of West Side Story‘s “Somewhere” from Blue Valentine. The results, however, were phenomenal, and the One From the Heart soundtrack serves as a crucial linchpin between the first phase of Waits’ career and the second act that would start with 1983’s Swordfishtrombones. The idea of the woman who sang “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” dueting with the barb-throated Waits just doesn’t play out in your head. Gayle’s voice is one of the smoothest and most pop-friendly in country music. On paper, this sounds like not such a great idea. Coppola was inspired by Waits’ duet with Bette Midler on “I Never Talk to Strangers” from 1977’s Foreign Affairs and he, ideally, wanted the duo to record this album together, telling the story of two angry halves of a marriage who go wondering off into the Las Vegas night to find themselves.įortunately, Midler wasn’t available and in her stead, Tom snagged country chanteuse Crystal Gayle. Sure, there are exceptions – but for every Aimee Mann and Magnolia, there are at least nine or ten Princes and Batman soundtracks.īut obviously Francis Ford Coppola had something grander in mind when he approached Tom Waits about recording the soundtrack to his 1982 film One From the Heart. It’s usually not the most career-defining moment for a musician. I have to admit, I’m not always excited about the idea of a single artist recording the entire soundtrack to a film. ![]() |
